Description

A piece of Nicaraguan folk art pottery, specifically a hand-carved and painted redware terracotta vase with hummingbird and floral motifs. The vase features a red body with a green rim, and the carved areas expose the natural, lighter color of the clay. The pattern depicts hummingbirds, leaves, and flowers. The distinctive technique involves etching or incising designs into the clay surface before firing and painting. The vase originates from Nicaragua, likely from the artisan village of San Juan de Oriente, which is renowned for this specific style of pottery. Artisans use red clay, shape it on a kick wheel, and then carve intricate designs using homemade tools (like bicycle spokes). Mineral oxides are used for coloring, followed by a firing process in a wood-burning kiln and a final polish with a smooth stone. H: 6" | W: 4.5" Good condition.
