Description
This hand-blown glass Weatherball barometer by La Crosse/McCormick features a spherical clear-glass body with a curved spout and etched celestial motifs, including a stylized sun and a wind-blowing cloud design. Inspired by early barometric principles discovered by Torricelli in the 1600s and later simplified into this form—often associated with Goethe—this Weatherball reacts to atmospheric pressure changes to indicate upcoming weather. Air trapped inside the vessel maintains steady internal pressure: when high pressure and fair weather approach, the liquid inside is pushed down the spout, and when low pressure and poor weather move in, increased internal pressure causes the liquid to rise. If the liquid spills over the top, it signals rapidly falling pressure and severe weather. Measures H: 8" | W: 4". Good condition.
