Description
This fossil plate features two well-preserved Knightia eocaena fish, the official state fossil of Wyoming and one of the most common vertebrate fossils worldwide. The specimen dates to the Eocene epoch, approximately 50 million years ago. The fish are preserved in a fine-grained, light-colored shale or limestone matrix, characteristic of the Green River Formation spanning Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. The darker reddish-brown fossil coloration likely results from iron mineral replacement during fossilization. Knightia were small, schooling freshwater fish that served as a primary food source for larger predatory species. The fossil plate measures approximately H: 4" × W: 6" and is in good condition.
