Description
A stylized Shona stone sculpture, also known as a "family sculpture" or "Ukama". The dark, curving, open form depicts a mother embracing her child. Shona sculptures are a popular form of African art that originated in Zimbabwe. The sculptures are hand-carved from local stone, such as serpentine or rapoka, and often depict family members merging together to symbolize unity. The name "Ukama" translates to "loving family" and the sculptures are meant to represent the bond of support and closeness within a family. The artist's name, Phinias Miamba, is inscribed on the base of this sculpture. H: 7.48" | W: 3.74" | L: 2.56" Good condition.
