Description
A Chinese cloisonné container, decorated with a pattern of birds and blossoms, which are common motifs in Chinese art. The lid has a copper knob at the top, and the interior of the container is turquoise enamel. Item rests on a carved wood stand. Cloisonné is a technique for decorating metalwork objects with colored material held in place or separated by metal wires. Cloisonné has a long history in Chinese art, with the earliest securely dated pieces from the Ming Xuande emperor's reign (1426–35). The technique involves creating designs on a metal surface, typically copper, with partitions (cloisons) made of thin metal wires. These partitions are then filled with a colored glass paste or enamel, and the vessel is fired and polished. Measurement is 8" and condition is good.
