Description
This is a vintage mid-century mantle clock made by Gruen Guild Swiss Clockmakers. This timepiece is called the “Cosmos” and was advertised as a “perpetual motion timepiece” that utilized a 15-jewel movement and a specialized temperature actuated bellow system that wound a spring and transmitted the stored energy to a spinning barrel system to wind the clock automatically. The included literature claims that a temperature variation of 2 degrees Fahrenheit could wind the clock enough to work for the next 48 hours. The clock is designed to sit inside an cherry wood case with sealed glass windows, while the construction of the clock itself is made from intricate brass pieces. The clock face has a modern look with Roman numerals indicating the 12, 3, 6, and 9 hour markers. The timepiece measures approximately 8.5” x 6.5” x 10”, and is in good condition.
