Description
Japanese folding screens, or "Byobu", are designed to mark spatial divisions within a room, and can be used to separate the more public areas of the home from the more private. This smaller style of folding screen is called a "Scholar's Byobu", which is designed to help block out distractions while someone studies. The painting depicted on this folding screen is called "Plum Tree Red and White Blossoms" by Japanese artist Ogata Korin. Ogata Korin was a Japanese landscape illustrator, lacquerer, painter, and textile designer of the Rinpa School. Born in 1658, Korin is best known for his byobu folding screens, such as Irises and Red and White Plum Blossoms, and his paintings on ceramics and lacquerware produced by his brother Kenzan. This folding screen measures approximately 18" x 9.25" when opened up, and is in good condition.
