Description
This ceremonial dance mask was created by the Yaure Tribe on the Ivory Coast of Africa. The Yaure believe their masks are embodiments of the Yu spirit, an extremely dangerous spirit that can harm humans; but can also ensure their survival. With the aid of such a mask, the people hoped to influence supernatural powers of the Yu and such masks were handled with extreme caution and only during the ceremonial festivities, and were absolutely kept out of sight of all women. This mask features an effigy of a male figure above the face of the mask, and also features the slit eyes and protruding lips that are hallmarks of Yaure design. The mask measures approximately 18" long and 6" wide, and it 3" tall. The mask is in good condition and also comes with a handwritten tag describing the history this style of mask.
