Description
Japanese miniature samurai kabuto (helmet) ornament in cast iron, with a fluted bowl and tiered neck guard laced with orange cord, fukigaeshi wings cast with chrysanthemum crests and relief decoration, two further chrysanthemum crests on the front of the bowl, and brass-tone kuwagata horns flanking a central sword-form crest. It rests on a red and gold brocade cushion with orange tasseled cords. The underside of the neck guard is inscribed in gilt 町会長退任記念 / 昭46.1 / 江戸川区長 中里喜一, which translates as "In commemoration of retirement as neighborhood association (chōkai) chairman, Shōwa 46.1 [January 1971], Edogawa Ward Mayor Nakazato Kiichi." Nakazato Kiichi served as mayor of Tokyo's Edogawa Ward from 1964 to 1999, and the helmet was issued in his name to mark a local chōkai chairman's retirement. The wings and horns are screw-mounted to the bowl, and no foundry mark is visible.
