Description
Gorham sterling silver flatware service in the Chantilly pattern, designed by William Christmas Codman and patented in 1895. The photographed forks-and-spoons group weighs 7.12 lb (approximately 3,230 grams): dinner forks, salad forks, teaspoons, round-bowl cream soup spoons, iced tea spoons, demitasse spoons, two serving spoons, a gravy ladle and a cream ladle. Hollow-handle dinner knives and butter spreaders with stainless blades, a pie server and a hooded asparagus server with a pierced blade weigh 3.64 lb (approximately 1,650 grams) as a separate mixed-material group. These are gross object weights, not pure-silver weights. Marks include STERLING, PAT. 1895, the Gorham lion, anchor and G, and the retailer stamp C.S. SHERWOOD, a jeweler in Portsmouth, Virginia. Script initials are engraved on some pieces: M on teaspoons and iced tea spoons, E on cream soup spoons.
