Description
Assembled group of eight 19th-century snuff and patch boxes, most in black-lacquered papier-mâché with mother-of-pearl decoration. Included are a tortoiseshell box centering a silver piqué foliate cartouche, a box bordered in iridescent shell chips around a mother-of-pearl medallion, a box inlaid with a flowering mother-of-pearl sprig, a small silver piqué floral box with a foil-lined interior, and a narrow box studded overall with tiny mother-of-pearl florets. The largest, an elongated octagonal box with golden mother-of-pearl daisies and gilt scrollwork, opens to a red-lacquered interior fitted as a pincushion with an aqua pad and braided trim; two plain black boxes complete the group, one with a slate-blue lacquered interior. All unmarked, consistent with English and Continental work of the Victorian era. Good antique condition with rubbing, scattered light scratches and small edge losses to the lacquer, flaking to the foil lining inside one lid, and toning to the pincushion pad. Graduated sizes from pocket-size up.
