Description
Pair of oval hand-painted portrait miniatures depicting ladies in 18th-century French court style. The first portrays a young woman with powdered curls dressed with tiny roses, in a white gown and sage-green wrap, housed in a bright gilt-brass/ormolu easel-back frame with leaf-tip border, ribbon-and-floral crest, and moire silk-covered backing. The second shows a lady with a blue ribbon in her upswept powdered hair and a garland of pink roses draped across her white gown with apricot bodice before a cloudy sky, signed Garnier in script at the right edge, and is set in a patinated pierced-filigree swivel frame with scrolled floral crest and velvet-backed panel. The companion portrait is unsigned, and no other maker's marks are present. Good condition, with patina, gilt wear, and losses to the painted reverse of the filigree frame, light rubbing to the brighter frame, and both portraits presenting cleanly under glass. Each measures approximately 4 x 6 inches.
