Description
A set of ten glazed terracotta plaques from Saint Andrew's Abbey, the Benedictine monastery in Valyermo, California, known for its handmade ceramic saints. They're made in the abbey's folk-art style: flat redware with incised lines, earth-toned glazes, and the wide eyes the pieces are known for. The set includes Catholic saints such as St. Anthony of Padua with the Christ Child and a Carmelite nun holding a crucifix, along with several musician and trumpeting angels and a Spanish colonial mission church. Each piece is hand-built and hand-painted, glazed on the front with an unglazed terracotta back, and has a loop on top for hanging. Offered in good condition with no chips.
