Description
Victorian papier-mâché lidded casket of shaped sarcophagus form, finished in black japanned lacquer and raised on a scalloped plinth base. The hinged lid and front are decorated with hand-painted floral sprays and grape clusters set with mother-of-pearl inlay, framed by gilt foliate scrollwork across the borders, sides, and feet. The interior holds a removable lift-out tray over a silk-lined compartment, with a mother-of-pearl escutcheon at the lock and a small patent plaque mounted inside.
