Description

CATALOG NOTE (added 2026-05-24): A close-up photograph of the blade spine has been added. The engraving reads "Mre d'Armes de Châtt — Avril 1877 — Cavrie Lre Mle 1822," identifying this as a French Sabre de Cavalerie Légère Modèle 1822, manufactured at the Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault in April 1877. The original lot description has been corrected to reflect this. A French light cavalry saber, manufactured at the Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault and dated April 1877. The blade spine is engraved with the arsenal signature, manufacture date, and pattern designation, identifying it as a Sabre de Cavalerie Légère Modèle 1822 — the standard French cavalry saber adopted January 18, 1822 and in service for nearly a century. The U.S. Model 1840 "Heavy Cavalry" saber was patterned after this design. Single-edged, curved steel Montmorency blade for cutting and thrusting from horseback. Three-branch brass hilt guard, brass pommel, leather-wrapped grip bound in twisted brass wire. The number 2485 stamped on the guard is a rack/inventory number used by French military units to track equipment issued to soldiers. 40"L. Used; shows normal age and wear; no significant damage.
