Description
A hand-painted Tonalá Mexican folk art bird, crafted in the form of a quail. These figurines are traditional ceramics from Tonalá, a town in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, which is renowned for its centuries-old pottery heritage. Each piece is handmade and hand-painted, featuring intricate, stylized nature motifs like flowers, foliage, and geometric patterns. The earthy, matte finish is characteristic of the traditional "Burnished" (Bruñido) technique, where the clay is polished with a smooth stone before firing to create a subtle sheen without a heavy glass glaze. While quails are popular subjects, Tonalá artisans also frequently depict other animals such as owls, ducks, and peacocks. Underside signed in cobalt "MEXICO" with artisan's initials. 7"H x 6.5"L Good condition.
