Description
A framed decorative reproduction of the celebrated ancient Roman fresco known as 'Flora' or 'Primavera,' depicting a young woman seen from behind gathering flowers. Presented in a gilt-finish frame with an embossed classical rosette border. The image reproduces one of the most famous surviving works of Roman wall painting. The original 'Flora' or 'Spring' is a fresco (38 x 32 cm) located at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (cat. no. 8834), found in Stabiae in Villa Arianna (cubiculum W 26). It is considered a masterpiece of painting from the Roman period (third Pompeian style), inspired by terracotta figurines of the fourth century BC, representing a barefoot female figure with her veil and the hem of her dress floating in the air as she turns to the side to take a sprig of white flowers from a thin shrub, placing it in a cornucopia-form basket held in her left hand. 41.5"H x 26"L Good condition.
