Description
A matched pair of small square framed black-and-white prints depicting Piero Fornasetti's iconic anthropomorphic sun motif from the 'Soli e Lune' (Suns and Moons) imagery. Each image is centered on a gray mat within a gilt rope-twist and beaded wood frame. Both prints reproduce well-known Fornasetti sun-face compositions: one shows a radiant sun with a human face rising over a detailed hill-town landscape with clouds, and the other shows a smiling sun face within a circular black-and-white striped rayed disc. The sun-face motif was one of Piero Fornasetti's signature devices, first developed in the 1940s for Gio Ponti's hand-printed 'Lunario del sole' (Solar Almanac) and later adapted into the 'Dodici Soli, Dodici Mesi' (Twelve Suns, Twelve Months) series of plates in the early 1950s, with the sun eventually recognized as one of Fornasetti's personal emblems. Fornasetti 'Soli e Lune' screenprints were also published by Graphique de France in 1993 in larger 11 x 14 inch formats; the small image size, trimmed edges, and absence of visible signature or publisher credit on these examples suggest they are book-plate reproductions or small decorative prints after Fornasetti rather than the full Graphique de France editions. 12"H x 12"L Good condition.
