Description
A hand-carved wooden wall plaque in deep relief, depicting a standing male figure in Renaissance-style dress — soft plumed cap, short slashed doublet with puffed sleeves, belted tunic, and high boots — carrying a draped sack over one shoulder and a bound bundle in the opposite hand, with three spherical forms (apples or balls) carved in the upper left corner. The panel is mounted in a narrow dark frame with a paper dust cover and wire hanger on the reverse. The plaque is worked from a single block of hardwood, stained a warm brown and finished to highlight the tool-carved striations of the figure's costume and hair. The subject's attire — a feathered or plumed bonnet, short tunic with a fringed hem, fitted hose, and turned-down boots — follows the visual conventions of late-Gothic and Northern Renaissance genre figures seen in German and Flemish decorative arts, and the composition (traveling figure with sack, bundle, and three round objects) is consistent with folk depictions of a merchant, traveler, or the Prodigal Son. 23"H x 15"L Good condition.
