Description
A hand painted ceramic vase by Leonardo Bernabé from Tonalá Jalisco, México. The Bernabé family is a world-renowned multi-generational lineage of master potters from Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. The Bernabé family is famously credited with reviving and perfecting the Petatillo technique, which is a highly intricate style named for the "petate" (straw mat) texture. It involves filling empty spaces between main design elements (like birds or flowers) with extremely fine, hand-painted crosshatched lines. The tradition began in the mid-19th century. The most famous patriarch was José Bernabé Campechano (1935–2019), recognized as a "Grand Master" of Mexican folk art. Their work typically features a palette of red, black, beige, and white clays, often with motifs of birds, deer, and the "Flor de Tonalá" (Tonalá flower). 11"H x 6"W x 6"L Good condition.
