Description
A vintage wood telephone table, also known as a gossip bench. Developed after the invention of the telephone in 1876, these specialized pieces of furniture peaked in popularity between the 1930s and 1950s. They were designed to provide a dedicated, central location for the household's single landline phone, which was often a bulky, non-portable object located in a hallway. Designed for small spaces like entryways or hallways where a full desk would not fit. As cordless and mobile phones rendered fixed telephone stands obsolete, these benches have been repurposed as compact desks for laptops or reading nooks, small side tables, or plant stands. Features include red ink 'provincial' factory stamp, handwritten model number '1400', domed wooden button plugs, x-stretcher base and hinged stepped storage compartment. 21"H x 9.5"W x 15"L Good condition.
