Description

A Globe-Wernicke Universal Style sectional bookcase, which is a classic modular furniture system manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio. These are commonly known as "barrister" or "lawyer" bookcases due to their historic popularity in legal offices. This piece belongs to the Universal Style line, which featured a standard 34-inch outside width and was designed for flexibility. The "grade" refers to the wood and finish. The grade 298 ½ typically indicates a quartered oak (often referred to as mission oak or tiger oak) with a specific medium-toned finish. It is designed to hold books up to 9 inches tall. Globe-Wernicke began using pattern numbers on their labels around 1915. The "Universal" line was a prominent style produced during the early 20th century, with many examples dating between 1915 and 1925. The company was formed in 1899 in Cincinnati and became the most famous maker of these "elastic" (modular) bookcases. 63"H x 11"W x 34"L Good condition.
