Description

An oil on canvas landscape by noted early California painter Richard DeTreville (1864-1929), depicting a tranquil river winding through rolling, tree-studded hills beneath a warm, atmospheric sky. The composition is characteristic of DeTreville's plein air Northern California work, with confident brushwork and a rich, earthy palette of greens, golds, and amber tones. Signed at lower right. Presented in its original ornate gilt wood frame with foliate corner cartouches. DeTreville was born November 17, 1864, in Beaufort, South Carolina, into a prominent family of French ancestry -- his grandfather fought alongside George Washington and his father served as Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. Believed to be largely self-taught, he relocated to California in 1892, settling first in Stockton before moving to San Francisco around 1910, where he maintained a studio on Clement Street and worked as a cartoonist for the Park Presidio News. Considered one of the most prolific of the early California painters, DeTreville produced thousands of small-to-medium scale landscapes of the San Francisco Bay Area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Northern California. His works were sold locally through Schussler Brothers and Sanborn & Vail. He was a member of the American Art Bureau and exhibited at the White House Department Store in San Francisco. He worked primarily in oil and, on rare occasions, in watercolor. DeTreville spent his final years in Alameda, where he died on February 25, 1929. His works are held in the collections of the California Historical Society, the Oakland Museum of California, and the Alameda Historical Society. Medium: Oil on canvas. Signature: Signed lower right. Frame: Original ornate gilt wood frame. Biography label affixed to verso. Good condition.
