Description

A W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik M.J. Hummel Annual Plate for 1994, titled "The Doctor," model Hum 290, the twenty-fourth edition in the celebrated series of twenty-five issued from 1971 to 1995. The plate measures 7½ inches in diameter and features a bas-relief depiction of a young boy dressed as a doctor attending to a doll, rendered in polychrome hand-painted decoration on a cream ground with a brown-gradient rim. The motif derives from the original artwork of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (Berta Hummel), based on the "Doctor" figurine (Hum 127), first modeled by master sculptor Arthur Moeller in 1939. The front bears the incised "M.J. Hummel" signature; the reverse is marked Hum 290 and carries the blue printed Goebel text logo with TMK-7 crown mark, denoting manufacture in Rödental, Germany between 1991 and 1999. A copyright date of 1990 appears on the reverse, with 1994 as the year of issue. The Annual Plate series was inaugurated in 1971 to commemorate the centennial of the Goebel factory, with each year's edition limited to that year's production. The pierced foot rim accommodates wall hanging. Offered with the original retail box. Plate in good condition with no chips or cracks observed; box shows minor shelf wear and corner scuffing.
