Description
A hand-carved and brightly painted Oaxacan Alebrije in the shape of a goat. Alebrijes are a form of Mexican folk art that depict fantastical creatures. They are whimsical carvings often made from copal wood in villages around Oaxaca, Mexico. The figures are painted with intense colors and intricate patterns, making each piece unique. Alebrijes are believed by some to represent spirit animals or protectors in the dream world, with origins in Zapotec and Mixtec mythological traditions. The art form gained popularity in the 1940s, evolving from papier-mâché creations by Pedro Linares to the distinct Oaxacan wood carvings seen today. 6" H x 7" L x 2" W Good condition.
