Description
Original painting by renowned Greek modernist artist Manos Sofianos (often signed M. Sofianos), depicting a stepped village street scene characteristic of the Cycladic islands. The composition centers on a narrow stone stairway ascending through whitewashed, cubist-style buildings, a hallmark of Greek island architecture. Small human figures appear along the path, adding scale and quiet narrative to the scene. Executed in Sofianos’s distinctive modernist style, the work emphasizes strong, solid composition and architectural mass rather than anecdotal detail. The restrained palette and structured forms reflect the artist’s pursuit of monumentality and emotional depth, a defining trait of his oeuvre. Manos Sofianos was born in Kastella, Piraeus, and studied painting under Th. Drosos before continuing independent studies in Europe alongside expressionist painters. His career was marked by international recognition, including the Gold Palm Award at Monte Carlo in 1972. Works by Sofianos are held in major Greek collections, including the National Bank of Greece Art Gallery, the Ministry of Culture, and the Municipal Gallery of Piraeus. Signed by the artist. Dimensions: H: 21.25" | L: 17.5". Condition: Good.
