The shell is subovate in form with a bulbous body, a short spire, and a wide open aperture. The exterior surface is smooth, with natural coloration ranging from pale cream to light orange, sometimes showing darker spotting or banding. The interior displays a glossy, light-toned finish This species is distinguished by shoulder spines that extend to the outer lip, a feature used to differentiate it from related Melo species. Historically, baler shells were used by Aboriginal peoples as scoops or bailers in canoes, which gave rise to the common name.
