Description

Framed print of The Fighter Pilot by noted American aviation artist Maxine McCaffrey, a distinguished contributor to the United States Air Force Art Program. McCaffrey became associated with the USAF Art Program in 1961 and later deployed to South Vietnam and Thailand in 1967 to document the experience, missions, and environments of U.S. Air Force personnel during the Vietnam War. Her works are historically significant, particularly those addressing the POW/MIA issue, and she donated over 60 pieces to the USAF collection. The illustration depicts the “Red River Fighter Pilot,” a symbolic representation of the American pilots who flew missions during the North Bombing Operation in the Vietnam War. The name refers to the Red River Delta in North Vietnam, the center of intense air combat. The pilot is shown in period-correct flight gear used by Phantom F-4 aviators—the primary U.S. fighter aircraft of the era. McCaffrey’s work combines documentary accuracy with expressive detail, capturing both the intensity and resolve of the fighter pilots who served in the conflict. Dimensions: H: 23" | W: 17", good condition.
