Description
A Sericho pallasite meteorite. This rare type of stony-iron meteorite was officially identified in 2016 in Kenya, although local camel herders had known of the large, dense stones for decades. It is a mix of nickel-iron metal and olivine crystals (the gemstone peridot). Pallasites are thought to have formed at the core-mantle boundary of an asteroid in the early solar system, dating back approximately 4.5 billion years. Over 2.8 tons of the meteorite have been recovered from a 45-kilometer long strewn field in Isiolo County, Kenya. These meteorites are popular among collectors and scientists for their beauty and rarity, often used in jewelry or sold as specimens. Meteorite has three felt protective pads at underside. H: 4" | W: 7" Good condition.
