Description
This silk table runner, from the Shanghai Museum of Art, depicts “Hermits” by Sun Wei of the Tang Dynasty (618–907 A.D.). The design reproduces part of a painting that shows seven sages, representing the story of “Zhu Lin Qi Xian” — seven hermits of the Weijin period (A.D. 220–420) who retreated to a bamboo forest to pursue art, philosophy, and freedom. Sun Wei, a Sichuan-based painter at the end of the Tang dynasty, is known for this as his only authenticated surviving work. The piece carries historical notes from Emperor Zhao Ji of the Song dynasty, who praised the spiritual depth captured in the composition. The table runner is golden in color, handmade, and measures L: 56". It is in good condition.
