Description
A traditional Chinese inkstone, used for grinding inksticks into liquid ink for calligraphy and painting. The piece is made of a clay-like material and features a rectangular form with a rounded top and irregular, carved edges that give it a natural, organic appearance. The surface is intricately decorated with a high-relief carving of a dragon emerging from swirling clouds and waves. The dragon, symbolizing power, strength, and good fortune in Chinese culture, is rendered with detailed scales, claws, and flowing movement. The central area of the inkstone includes the smooth yan tang (grinding surface), while the lower recessed section, the mo chi (ink pool), serves as a reservoir for liquid ink. The surface has a dark, aged patina with some lighter areas showing natural wear over time. Stamped on the back by the maker. Condition: Good, with some chips and surface wear consistent with age and use.
