Description
This is a Mossi basket, a handcrafted market basket made by the Mossi people of Burkina Faso, West Africa. It is woven from straw, reeds, and other plant fibers, forming a wide, flaring shape with a square bottom and round top. The rim and body are reinforced with strips of black or zebu leather, and a decorative band of cowrie shells is attached with leather. The weaving includes intricate patterns, such as a black and tan herringbone design. The basket has a tag reading: "Mossi Basket: A market basket, used to carry and store vegetables. Made of straw and plant fiber, it is sometimes decorated with cowries. Made in Burkina Faso." It measures H: 9" | W: 17" and is in good condition.
