Description
This set features four Navajo sand paintings, a traditional art form originally created for healing and ceremonial purposes using crushed minerals and natural materials. Each panel depicts Yei, or "Holy People," central to Navajo cosmology. The two upper panels show human-like figures with elaborate headdresses and body paint, representing male and female Yei, while the bottom panels depict more abstract or plant-like figures, symbolizing deities or sacred elements. Originally, ceremonial sand paintings were ephemeral, made for single-day use, but permanent sand paintings like these have been produced for sale since the 1950s. All four panels are signed on the back, including one by Curtis. Good condition.
