Description
Pastel on paper (later print edition, signed and dated 1996). Framed and matted, titled “Van” with label notation: Painted on Paper . This signed Wayne Thiebaud piece depicts a nostalgic roadside van rendered in his signature pastel palette—violet, rose, and ultramarine hues blending into a luminous horizon. Though the composition dates to 1984, the signature and date “1996” suggest a later artist-authorized impression or revisitation of the theme. The work was donated to the Pence Gallery Auction Gala in Davis, California (2000) —a fitting provenance, as Thiebaud was a longtime supporter of the UC Davis art community and frequently contributed to local exhibitions. Framed under glass with professional matting by Jacqueline Clemenson; matwork by Fernando Valdéz. The verso bears Pence Gallery and framing annotations, including a handwritten catalog reference (“100 1985”). A beautiful example of Thiebaud’s mastery of atmosphere and light, Van captures both the isolation and optimism of the open road—a quintessentially Californian motif. This print was signed by Wayne Thiebaud in 1996. The signature has been authenticated.
