Description
This mid century rectangular Chinese lacquer cabinet has one large interior shelf and brass capped feet. The chinoiserie scenes painted on the two front doors to the cabinet are a depiction of geishas meeting for tea on an oriental rug with a decorative vase and incense burner, and is set against a backdrop landscape replete with pagodas, birds, fruit, and flowers, and has a Greek key border painted around the front of the cabinet. The sides are painted with cranes and delicate hanging flowers and water lilies, and the top is painted with a flying bird with leaves and rushes. These cabinets are typically made from wood, usually elm, and are coated with multiple layers of lacquer, a natural resin. Black lacquer furniture was often given as a wedding gift and is less common than red lacquer furniture. The cabinet measures 40" x 26" x 13" and is in good condition.
