Description
Lithograph on paper, created in 1974 as part of a suite of six works produced at Editions Press, San Francisco (1974–75). This impression is one of only five Editions Press Impressions, aside from the numbered edition of 125 and other designated proofs. Hand-signed in pencil by the artist "Dai C. Chang" (pinyin), bearing both the embossed chop of Editions Press and the artist’s personal seals. Printed on fine Rives BFK or German Etching Paper under the direction of Master Printer Ernest F. de Soto and team. The artwork depicts two peony plants, one with a fully open blossom in delicate whites and pinks, the other with a smaller bud, painted in a traditional Chinese ink-and-color style characteristic of Zhang Daqian’s floral works. The simplicity of the composition and detailed brushwork highlight the peony’s symbolic elegance as the “queen of flowers.” Zhang Daqian (1899–1983) is regarded as one of the most important Chinese artists of the 20th century, renowned for both his mastery of classical techniques and his modern innovations. Dimensions: H: 23.5" x W: 31.5" (framed). Condition: Good, with light wear consistent with age and framing.
