Description

This is a limited edition lithograph titled Mountain Monastery by the Waterfall (1974) by Zhang Daqian (also known as Chang Dai-chien, 1899–1983), one of the most celebrated and influential Chinese artists of the 20th century. The work is a Presentation Proof II out of only five produced by Editions Press, signed in pinyin as "Dai C. Chang," and includes both the artist’s red seal and the embossed chop of the publisher. Zhang Daqian was a master of traditional Chinese ink painting and later became internationally known for his bold innovations, particularly his splash-ink and color-splash techniques. He was trained in classical Chinese methods but also absorbed elements of modern Western art during his years abroad. In his lifetime, Zhang gained global recognition and was often compared to Picasso in both influence and prolific output. His ability to bridge traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern sensibilities earned him a unique place in art history. This lithograph, inspired by the landscape of Mount Hua, exemplifies Zhang's mastery of atmosphere and brushwork. It was produced under the direction of Walter F. Maibaum, coordinated by Rebecca Schnelker, with typography by 847 Graphics and printing by Reliable Lithograph Company, Inc. Commentary was provided by the noted Chinese art historian Michael Sullivan. All plates were destroyed after printing, ensuring the edition's exclusivity. Professionally framed with a linen mat and preserved in good condition, this item measures H: 27" x W: 31".
