Description
This is a carved wooden Maori mask, also known as a Tiki mask or Koruru, originating from New Zealand. The piece measures approximately 5 inches in height by 3 inches in width. It is carved from wood—likely Matai or a similar native timber—with a reddish stained finish. The mask features traditional Maori design motifs including detailed facial patterns resembling moko (tattoo art), and inlaid eyes made from Paua shell (New Zealand abalone), a common decorative element in Maori carving. The back of the mask is signed with the initials "HG" and includes a small hole for wall mounting. This type of carving traditionally symbolizes protection, ancestry, and spiritual guardianship. The item is in good condition with no significant damage.
