Description
This is a square-form ceramic ashtray designed by Marcello Fantoni for Raymor in the 1950s. It is decorated with a lava glaze in variegated tones of green, yellow, and brown in an abstract organic design. It has a square shape with indented edges and a textured surface. It is signed “Fantoni Italy for Raymor” on the base. This piece was created by Marcello Fantoni (1915–2011), an Italian ceramicist born in Florence. He studied at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana, graduating in 1934 as a maestro of art in ceramics. In 1936 he established the Fantoni Ceramic Studio in Florence. His works are represented in major international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. In 1970 he founded the International School of Ceramic Arts in Florence, where he continued to work and teach until his passing in 2011. It measures 9 inches wide. It is in good condition.
