Description
This is a vintage stoneware figure designed by Robert Maxwell in the 1960s, crafted in California. The piece is part of his whimsical “Beastie” or “Critter” series and features a textured exterior sprayed with engobe to simulate stoneware, a characteristic of his early works. It is signed on the base. Robert Maxwell (1932–2020) was an American ceramic artist best known for his mid-century modern pottery and imaginative animal sculptures. Educated at UCLA, he developed innovative glazing techniques and bold geometric patterns influenced by the Bauhaus movement. Maxwell’s works were produced in collaboration with companies including NS Gustin, Winfield China, and Pottery Craft USA. His Beastie series remains a distinctive representation of his playful yet modern ceramic style. The figure measures 4” tall by 4” wide and is in good condition with minor wear consistent with age.
