Description
This is an Oribe ware square plate crafted by Aito Aichi pottery in Japan. It features the characteristic mottled green copper glaze with iron-oxide painted motifs, along with the pottery stamp. The plate measures 7” tall by 7” wide and comes with its original box. Oribe ware originated in the late Momoyama to early Edo period (1573–1615) and was named after the tea master Furuta Oribe, who popularized its use in tea ceremonies. Distinguished by its bold, asymmetrical shapes and free-flowing iron-oxide designs under green glaze, Oribe ware represented a departure from the rigid symmetry of earlier Japanese ceramics. Produced in the Mino region, including Seto’s Akazu kilns, Oribe ware remains one of Japan’s most recognizable and historically significant ceramic traditions. It is in good condition with minor wear consistent with age.
