Description
This is an antique hand-carved soapstone incense burner featuring Foo dogs, also known as guardian lions. The design includes dual Foo lions flanking the central burner, with a pierced body and a removable lid topped with a lion finial. Foo dogs, rooted in Chinese cultural symbolism, represent strength and protection. Traditionally placed at entrances of temples, palaces, and homes, they were believed to guard against evil spirits and bring fortune. Soapstone incense burners such as this were often used in religious or ceremonial contexts, where incense was burned to purify the air and create a spiritual atmosphere. It measures 5” tall and is in good condition with minor wear consistent with age.
