Description
Authentic Russian nesting dolls, handpainted with floral motifs. Includes five dolls ranging from 1.5” H to 6.25” H. Bright colors and traditional patterns. In good condition with minor wear consistent with handling. The Matryoshka doll originated in Russia in 1890, inspired by a Japanese Fukuruma doll. The first set was created by artist Sergei Malyutin and woodcarver Vasily Zvyozdochkin and gained international recognition at the 1900 Paris Exposition. The design symbolizes motherhood and the continuity of life, with the largest doll traditionally representing the mother and the smaller ones her children.
