Description
This is an authentic vintage Russian Matryoshka set consisting of 10 hand-painted nesting dolls. The set features detailed lacquer-style artwork with traditional Russian fairy tale motifs and is signed in Russian, referencing “Zagorsk (Sergiev Posad) by Loginova,” a town known for its significance in Russian folk art. The largest doll measures 5” W x 10” H, and the smallest measures 0.5” W x 0.75” H. It is in good condition with vibrant paint. The Matryoshka doll originated in Russia in 1890, inspired by a Japanese Fukuruma doll. The first set was created by artist Sergei Malyutin and woodcarver Vasily Zvyozdochkin and gained international recognition at the 1900 Paris Exposition. The design symbolizes motherhood and the continuity of life, with the largest doll traditionally representing the mother and the smaller ones her children.
