Description
This is a painting on papyrus depicting the Principal Entrance to the Great Mosque of Al-Azhar in Cairo, inspired by Views of Cairo by Robert Hay (London: Tilt and Bogue, 1840). The artwork is signed “Guss” at the bottom. The Mosque of Al-Azhar was founded in AD 970 by the Fatimid Caliph al-Mu‘izz following his conquest of Egypt. It was the first mosque built in Cairo and the fourth in Africa. Having undergone multiple renovations over the centuries, it reflects a blend of architectural styles. It also houses Al-Azhar University, one of the world’s oldest universities, recognized historically as a major center of Islamic learning. It is framed in a gold-toned wood frame under glass and measures 17” L x 23.25” H. It is in good condition with minimal visible wear.
