Description
This is a pair of ceramic Buddhist figurines, each measuring 18.25 inches in height and in good condition with minimal wear. One figure depicts Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, seated with one arm resting on a raised knee. The other depicts a Chinese mudman or sage. They feature fine detailing in attire and facial expressions. In Chinese mythology, Guanyin is regarded as the goddess of mercy and the embodiment of compassion. She originated from the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, whose myth spread through China during the rise of Buddhism and merged with local beliefs through syncretism to form the present-day representation of Guanyin.
