Description
This is a handmade studio art pottery matcha bowl (chawan) featuring natural glazes in a wabi-sabi aesthetic. It displays earthy tones of blue, brown, and cream. Matcha bowls, known as chawan, have a long history rooted in Zen Buddhism and the Japanese tea ceremony. Originating from Chinese imports, they evolved into uniquely crafted vessels that reflect the principles of wabi-sabi. First used for medicinal purposes by elites and religious figures, they became central to the formal tea ceremony (chanoyu) beginning in the 12th century. The bowl measures 11 inches wide by 6 inches high and is in good condition with no visible cracks or chips.
