Description
Framed art print of Winged Figure (1889) by Abbott Handerson Thayer. This serene female angel is one of many Thayer painted during his career, reflecting his shift from animal painting to portraits and allegorical figures after training in Paris. In Winged Figure, Thayer blends idealism with naturalism—symbolic wings paired with a figure rendered with gravity and individuality. He described his winged subjects as living in an “exalted atmosphere… where one need not explain the action of his figures.” This approach aligned with a broader late 19th-century trend of using angelic imagery to personify feminine virtues.
