Description
This framed oil on canvas after an 18th-century Roman School composition that depicts Artemisia mourning Mausolus. Artemisia II was the wife and sister of King Mausolus of Caria. She ruled independently after his death and commissioned the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, a monumental tomb dedicated to him. She is also said to have drunk Mausolus' ashes with her drink every day, hence the jar in her hands. The Mausoleum was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and is now a ruin in modern-day Turkey. It measures 47" x 58.75". The painting is in fair condition, with cracks and losses on the gilded frame.
