Description
This is an Italian Baroque oil painting on canvas, after Lavanda dei piedi (The Washing of the Feet) painted by Agostino Scilla, measuring 63" x 50". It depicts an intimate biblical scene with Jesus on the right, robed in red, washing the feet of his disciples. The composition features fewer figures than the version attributed to Agostino Scilla, creating a more focused interpretation of the moment. The painting shows atmospheric Baroque lighting with chiaroscuro contrast, though less dramatic than in typical Roman Baroque works. The brushwork and structure suggest a trained artist, possibly a follower or student from the circle of Scilla or Andrea Sacchi. Agostino Scilla (1629–1700) was a Sicilian painter and pioneering scientist in paleontology. He studied under Andrea Sacchi in Rome and became known for his religious artworks and scientific illustrations. The canvas has visible white paint spillage and minor damage. The gold-toned, ornately detailed frame shows cracking and breakage.
